Major Earthquake Devastates Haiti Again!
On Saturday, August 14th around 8:29AM EST, a 7.2 earthquake hit the southwestern region of Haiti. The devastation of the quake struck most strongly in the departments, or states, of Nippes, Grand’Anse, and Le Sud – although its effects could be felt throughout the Caribbean. These three departments house around 20% of Haiti’s 11 million population, and are a major agricultural area of the Caribbean nation. In fact, the municipalities are within the same region that was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 and which has never fully recovered. Saturday’s 7.2 earthquake is greater than the 7.0 quake which leveled the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince in January of 2010. That prior calamity resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands, and is the catastrophic event that led to the founding of Haiti On The Rise.
Jacqueline Oriscar Lee (Jackie) and her husband Randall Lee, co-founders of the non-profit, have been communicating with their network throughout Haiti to access the situation and determine how Haiti On The Rise can assist in the southwestern sector’s recovery over time. As one can imagine, communication with the affected region is very difficult and we will update you all as quickly as we can.
John Ramos of KPIX 5, Emma Goss of KTVU 2, and other local media have taken a supportive interest in informing the Bay Area about the recent catastrophe that struck Haiti, and links to their aired segments, which feature Jackie and Randall of Haiti On The Rise, are listed below:
