Education

In Haiti, only 10% of grade school funding comes from the public sector. The majority of grade school funding emanates from the private sector, including religious organizations and other groups. Therefore, most of the grade school education system is private – requiring the payment of tuition. Lacking affordable public schools, many parents feel obligated to send their children to private schools in order to further their education. Because of the high cost of private education in Haitian terms, numerous families find it difficult to pay tuition throughout the school year. Consequently, pupils commonly do not attend school and return back home because of their household’s inability to pay. It may take months before parents can arrange enough funds to re-enroll their children. This means that children may stay at home for prolonged periods of time without an education. Many children graduate from high school at somewhat older ages, if they graduate at all, because of this dilemma. With this predicament recurring over a number of generations, Haiti’s illiteracy rate is currently around an appalling 39%.

It is understandable why the rural population and the underprivileged in particular are more greatly affected by having education. The recent major catastrophes — the earthquake and hurricane — seriously affected the already overburdened educational system with the loss of teachers and displacement of students. In addition, more than 4,500 schools buildings were damaged or destroyed. Furthermore, Haiti needs considerable nutrition and school supplies for its students. Haiti On The Rise is committed to making a difference by contributing towards rebuilding the education infrastructure and helping children and adults attend schools.

For the past eight academic years, Haiti On The Rise has been providing scholarships to young students who would not have attended school otherwise.  Each of our scholarship recipients and their families has remarkable stories of survival, resilience, and recovery. Many of our students have lost one or two parents or guardians – mostly from the recent disasters that have racked Haiti this decade – and all are in a state of financial need.  Please help us keep our young, promising students in school or enable another in need to receive the gift of education by sponsoring a student today.  $500 can enable a young student to attend primary school for an academic year.  It is through education that the younger generation of Haiti has hope for tomorrow.  Please sponsor a young student today. Thank You!

“Last year, I attended school with only six notebooks.  Because of Haiti On The Rise’s supporters, I now have all of my school supplies.  Thanks Haiti On The Rise!”

“Prior to meeting Mrs Jackie, the private school used to send my daughter home from school for non-payment. My daughter used to feel very embarrassed.  Because of the scholarship program, I don’t have to worry about that now.  Thanks, Haiti On The Rise!”
